Lodolite, Garden Quartz, Phantom Quartz: One Stone, Several Names

Lodolite is also sold as garden quartz, scenic quartz, shaman's stone and shamanic dream quartz. As we use the word, it means clear quartz holding visible inclusions of other minerals. Phantom quartz describes a growth feature that can appear in the same crystal. Moss agate is a different material altogether.

KEY TAKEAWAYS · EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

  • ✦In mineralogy, an inclusion is any material trapped inside a mineral during its formation.
  • ✦Quartz is silicon dioxide (SiO₂) and defines 7 on the Mohs hardness scale.
  • ✦Chlorite takes its name from the Greek chloros, green, in reference to its usual color.
  • ✦Phantom quartz shows visible layers of overlapping crystal growth; the interior outlines are called phantoms.
  • ✦Moss agate is a form of chalcedony, not a quartz crystal, and it is not a true agate because it lacks concentric banding.

The short answer

Lodolite is also sold as garden quartz. Whichever label a shop uses, what you are looking at is quartz with other minerals enclosed inside it. Quartz is silicon dioxide, hardness 7 on the Mohs scale, and many of its named varieties are defined by what they enclose rather than by the quartz itself.

An inclusion, in mineralogy, is any material trapped inside a mineral during its formation. In a lodolite sphere those trapped minerals sit at different depths, which is why the stone seems to hold a small, layered world rather than a flat pattern.

Naming quartz by its inclusions is an old habit. Rutilated quartz is clear quartz with needle-like inclusions of rutile. Prase is leek-green quartz colored by inclusions of the mineral actinolite. Lodolite follows the same logic, with a looser, more poetic set of names.

Lodolite is also sold as scenic quartz, shaman's stone and shamanic dream quartz. If you searched for any of these, you arrived at the same subject.

What gives the scenes their color

Color in lodolite comes from the enclosed minerals, not from the quartz. Clear quartz is colorless; the greens, reds, golds and whites belong to what it holds. In our own spheres, chlorite gives green, hematite red, limonite gold and kaolinite white. Each is a separate mineral or mineral mixture.

Chlorite is a group of sheet-silicate minerals, usually in shades of green; the name comes from the Greek chloros, meaning green. Hematite is an iron oxide, Fe₂O₃, found in colors from steel gray to reddish brown and red.

Limonite is a mixture of hydrated iron oxide-hydroxides rather than a single mineral, and kaolinite is a clay mineral. Our four-season mineral guide treats all four in depth.

Phantom quartz is a growth record, not a separate stone

Phantom quartz is quartz in which the outline of an earlier crystal stays visible inside the finished one. The boundary between growth stages shows because of a change in composition or a thin layer of included mineral. The inner outlines are called phantoms. Like all quartz, phantom quartz is silicon dioxide.

So "lodolite vs phantom quartz" compares two different kinds of description. Lodolite names the scene: minerals scattered through the crystal like a landscape. Phantom names the structure: a ghost crystal nested inside a later one.

The two often meet in the same piece. A crystal can enclose drifts of chlorite and also record an earlier growth stage as a pale inner silhouette. When that happens, both words are accurate.

We read the phantom as a record of time. Each line inside the sphere marks an earlier surface of the crystal, preserved as it continued to grow. That idea of growth held in layers is close to how a BaZi chart reads a life: as seasons laid one over another, each leaving its trace.

A free reading translates your own chart into that seasonal language. It asks only for your birth date, plus your birth hour if you know it, with no signup.

Moss agate is a different material

Moss agate is not lodolite. It is a form of chalcedony, silica made of crystals too small to see without magnification, with green mineral filaments that suggest moss. Lodolite is a single transparent quartz crystal with larger inclusions inside. The two can look alike in a photograph, but they form differently.

Chalcedony is cryptocrystalline or microcrystalline silica: mostly quartz, with minor amounts of intergrown moganite. Moss agate's field is clear or milky white, and its dendritic inclusions are mainly oxides of manganese or iron. Despite its name, it contains no organic matter, and it is not a true agate, because it lacks concentric banding.

The practical difference is clarity and depth. Lodolite tends to look like a scene behind glass, with inclusions floating at different distances. Moss agate tends to look like a pattern drawn into a translucent body. Both are natural; they are simply different materials.

What we call ours and why

We describe our spheres as Lodolite phantom quartz because many of them show both features: scene-like inclusions and the outlines of earlier growth. Using both names is the most accurate description we can give, and it keeps the label plain.

Lodolite phantom quartz; each sphere is hand-selected and filmed for you before dispatch. Natural inclusions vary and are not a defect.

Our four seasonal editions follow the inclusion minerals: Spring Moss carries green chlorite, Summer Ember red hematite, Autumn Amber golden limonite and Winter Frost white kaolinite.

In BaZi symbolism, each edition also carries the element of its season: Wood for Spring Moss, Fire for Summer Ember, Metal for Autumn Amber and Water for Winter Frost. Read symbolically, in 2026, a Yang Fire year, Winter Frost is the edition we set as a cooling counterpoint for charts already rich in Fire. The pairing is symbolic and meant for reflection, not a forecast.

The 16 × 8mm Petite Bracelet — Pure Solid keeps all sixteen spheres to one edition. The 16 × 8mm Petite Bracelet — Four-Season Mix (7+4+3+2) lets the leading season take seven of the sixteen. The 12mm Collector Focal-Orb Necklace holds one larger sphere on a 45+5 cm chain; our proportion guide compares the two scales.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is lodolite the same as garden quartz?

Lodolite is also sold as garden quartz, and as scenic quartz and shaman's stone. Whatever the label, the subject is quartz holding visible inclusions of other minerals. In our spheres those minerals are chlorite, hematite, limonite or kaolinite, and we describe the finished stone as Lodolite phantom quartz.

What is the difference between lodolite and phantom quartz?

Lodolite describes inclusions: minerals scattered through a quartz crystal like a landscape. Phantom quartz describes structure: the visible outline of an earlier crystal inside a later one, left by successive stages of growth. The two features often appear in the same piece, which is why we describe our spheres as Lodolite phantom quartz.

Is lodolite the same as moss agate?

No. Moss agate is a form of chalcedony, silica made of crystals too small to see without magnification, with green filaments that resemble moss. Lodolite is a single transparent quartz crystal with larger mineral inclusions inside. Moss agate is also not a true agate, because it lacks the concentric banding that defines agate.

What gives lodolite its colors?

The color comes from the minerals enclosed in the quartz, not from the quartz itself, which is colorless. In our spheres, green is chlorite, a sheet-silicate group named from the Greek for green; red is hematite, an iron oxide; gold is limonite; and white is kaolinite, a clay mineral.

Is shamanic dream quartz a different stone?

Lodolite is also sold as shamanic dream quartz. Under any of these labels, the subject is quartz holding visible mineral inclusions. We describe our spheres simply as Lodolite phantom quartz, the name that states what they are, and each sphere is hand-selected and filmed before dispatch so you can see its inclusions.
